Newcastle’s new Civil & Family Court and Tribunals Centre has finally opened, bringing modern facilities and better access to justice for families across the region.
The Newcastle Civil & Family Court and Tribunals Centre opened in January 2020, as part of the latest phase of renovations to the Civic Centre in the Centre of Newcastle.
The court section of the Civic Centre, a grade II listed building, now has 25 new rooms for hearings to take place. The £45m renovation project was given the go-ahead in 2015 and has suffered a number of delays, including the removal of asbestos after it was discovered there in 2019.
Browell Smith & Co is delighted to see the new court section of the Civic Centre finally opened to the public.
So how will this improve things for people attending court for Civil and Family cases in Newcastle?
The quayside courts are in a lovely location if you’re a sightseer, but they’re not especially accessible for everyone else and are a long walk from the nearest Metro station.
Moving the Civil and Family Court to the Civic Centre means they’re no longer at the bottom of a steep hill, and brings them much closer to the Haymarket transport hub.
There is also a new accessible entrance to the civic centre, facing the direction of the Great North Road and Newcastle University, overlooking the civic centre gardens.
The civil and family court system UK-wide has been subjected to delays in processing applications, causing frustration for everyone involved, but especially for clients. These new courts will hopefully allow far more hearings to take place, which means reduced waiting times for crucial hearings. For families who are keen to resolve their issues and move on with their lives, this is outstanding news.
While nobody is attending court to enjoy a nice day out, it is a very challenging time for everyone concerned and it can help for this to be taking place in clean, modern surroundings. These purpose-built facilities will now be completely fit for purpose.
The courts also now come with a vastly improved digital infrastructure, essential for doing almost any kind of work efficiently in 2020 and beyond.
The court is now just a couple minutes’ close to our Savile Row office, which makes it perfect for pre- and post-hearing client conferences.
